The date was Saturday, September 8th 2012. Team Aurora BayCare Trauma Warriors successfully dominated the British special ops inspired Tough Mudder. It was a long road in training, but the mud, sweat & tears brought our team closer.
Lisa Koehler RN CEN, Clinical Educator Emergency/Trauma Serivces was our team captain. I asked Lisa to give me her overview of the Tough Mudder training course we offered here at Aurora BayCare Sports Medicine and how it helped with the actual event. Here is what she had to say-
“The Mudder was everything I expected and more. It was definitely a challenge both mentally and physically. For me, the worst obstacle was the Cliffhanger. This is where you scale a wall, end up on a platform about 20 feet above the water (like jumping out of my second story office window).
I have a fear of heights so this was a big challenge for me. I was able to do it but I was on that platform a longtime, I was also not prepared for what it’s like to swim with clothes and shoes on!
The training was absolutely essential. Personally I should have done more running because there were long stretches between some obstacles. What the training did was condition you for the terrain changes, crawling under low clearances, sometimes only 8 inches and if you got anything up too high you got an electric shock. Pulling your body over walls and hay bales. Nothing prepares you for the ice water or electric shocks though!
I will definitely be doing the Tough Mudder next year. It’s in Green Bay by the way, and I will definitely do a Tough Mudder boot camp again. Both were a great experience.”
I couldn’t agree more. The training was essential, the Tough Mudder was difficult, but I plan to do it all again next year! Why don’t you join me? Email me to commit yourself to our 2013 Tough Mudder teamJ I’ll hold you to it!
