Six Aurora BayCare Medical Center employees have embarked on a wellness challenge that will change their lives forever! Over the next six months, these people will be coached, trained and transformed into triathlon-level athletes through the Aurora BayCare Sports Medicine Live Fit program.
This was an awesome week! Tri training on Tuesday was a blast…getting in the water with the entire group and learning how to swim with others right next to you or on your back, trying to take your air and trying to give you their splashes in your mouth. We went from a swim to a bike to a run…a mini-tri of sorts and it felt good. I am starting to realize the changes and learn that this is possible and we ALL can do this!
But the best part of the week was today…when I completed the Oshkosh Half Marathon relay with two other friends! We ran for Team Zzari…in support of Muffin who is battling breast cancer. I have to be honest, I was nervous running this because I was not sure how I would perform as my training runs have been on a treadmill and I am terrible at pacing myself. I requested to run the shortest of the three lengths, because I was not in as good of shape as my teammates, so I completed the 3.75 mile leg. After about a mile, I started to get a cramp in my side and I was going to walk a short distance, but then I thought….I’m doing this for Muffin, who could not do this even if she wanted to. The cramp will go away, it’s transient, but cancer is a second by second battle…and if she is fighting and winning her battle, I’m going to run this entire leg! And I did. I ran it all and I completed it with a faster pace than I ever run on the treadmill! And the icing on the cake…we placed third in our division and took home a trophy!!!!
