LiveFit Challenge Week 15: John’s Update

Six Aurora BayCare Medical Center employees have embarked on a wellness challenge that will change their lives forever! Over the next six months, these people will be coached, trained and transformed into triathlon-level athletes through the Aurora BayCare Sports Medicine Live Fit program.

Six weeks to go. Anxiety is starting to interject into daily thoughts. Not sure if this is because of the event or the tight stretchy stuff that makes up a tri-uniform. All the preparation is paying off. Reflecting over the past several months it is impressive to see how well the trainers have prepared us for the home stretch. Stretching back, shoulders and hips while strengthening the core has made a huge difference in being able to tolerate the running and pedaling required to complete the triathlon components. The physical benefits gained from the training are terrific but other “side effects” are actually larger improvements. Being part of a structure and team to share mutual woes and whines helps drive motivation. Spiritually the work out time helps re-evaluate life and priorities while providing a stage to battle demons. It is amazing how the brain can deal with history and future during training runs. The net result is a calming of the soul and a gentler perspective. One starts to realize how important some sort of physical activity and fitness is to dealing with the challenges life brings. The frightening part is how much is on the shelf to be sorted out. Next thing will be a realization an ultra-marathon will be needed to purge all the bad karma. The home stretch will probably start 3 weeks prior to “T” day. Nutrition, transition practice and fine tuning will most likely become a priority. We had a taste of this the past weekend at the East Side YMCA. There was a Triathlon expo with a group of vendors and informative talks. The number of fit folks out there willing to share their experience with fitness is amazing. Cannot imagine how good their cardiovascular fitness is after years of training. Aging shouldn’t be as bad as it looks if everyone stays in shape.
