LiveFit Challenge Week 8: Amy’s Update

Amy Fischer is a registered nurse at Aurora BayCare Medical Center in Green Bay.

Six Aurora BayCare Medical Center employees have embarked on a wellness challenge that will change their lives forever! Over the next six months, these people will be coached, trained and transformed into triathlon-level athletes through the Aurora BayCare Sports Medicine Live Fit program.

So, here we are another week in, looking forward to getting together as a group for triathlon classes, but kind of sad to see the end of the 1:1 training sessions.   I wonder how I’ll feel after this challenge is completed.  After getting together with the group last time, I am looking forward to see what sort of off-the-wall comments will come out of everyone’s mouths….funny stuff.

One of the hardest challenges I have faced so far is using my core muscles.  We have worked  to rediscover the long-lost core muscles of mine….turns out I have some, but buried very very deep, and extremely weak.  However, thanks to the training, I now at least know how to ‘engage’ that group of muscles, and can tell when I’m doing the core muscle workout the wrong way.  Also, I was able to get in the Alter-G treadmill.  It is interesting to run with a portion of my body weight removed, but I felt like I was running inside a marshmallow…minus the sticky.

Today I have the good old Mommy guilt working against me.  I just got back from a girls weekend, but have tremendous guilt about leaving my children once again.  This training takes time, and my husband and I both realized it would, but this was above and beyond the training thing.  Oh well, I guess everyone needs a little ‘me’ time every now and then.

I really can’t wait for spring so we can get outside to exercise.  Yes, I realize I could bundle up and go outside now, but I think it needs to be at least 40 degrees out and no ice to slip and fall on.  Running on a treadmill is getting boring, although I am doing better than I have since high school.  Sometimes I just have to push myself through one more song or commercial.  Sometimes it’s just a matter of my body just ‘giving in’ and conquering the hatred of running in my mind.  Well, I can’t wait to see what’s in store for next week.
