LiveFit Challenge Week 3: Kim’s Update

Six Aurora BayCare Medical Center have embarked on a wellness challenge that will change their lives forever! Over the next six months, these people will be coached, trained and transformed into triathlon-level athletes through the Aurora BayCare Sports Medicine Live Fit program.

Kim Colantuono, registered nurse at Aurora BayCare Medical Center in Green Bay, shares her experience in week 2 of the LiveFit Challenge:

“What a rough couple of weeks it has been!

Last week, I got sick.  My head was full of  “yuck” and it went down into my chest.

On Thursday, when I went to work out, I went to a plank position to begin some push-ups.  Instead of going down, I actually started to cry during the session, not because it hurt, not because I was frustrated, it just came out because my entire body was exhausted.

I had no idea the tears were even starting, but as soon as they did, I tried to put a stop to them.  I swallowed hard, and away they went, but my body hated me.

When I was done with my session, I checked my phone messages and there was a call from my doctor telling me they had an opening right away. So off to the doctor I went, and she told me working out was probably not the smartest thing to do, when I felt so bad.  She prescribed me some meds, told me to take the day off and said if I needed a note for work, she’d write me one for two days.

So I listened to my body.  I rested Friday and the rest of weekend (slept most of the weekend) because come Monday, I was going to get back on the saddle and ride this to the end. And that’s exactly what I’ve done.

Monday morning came, and my new life began. I worked out on my own.  I started keeping track of everything that I am putting into my mouth. This is it, a new beginning, a new chance, a new opportunity, and a new me.

Working out this week has felt great.  Yeah I’m sore, and tired, but I’m dedicated to this. Working out on my own has been easier than I thought because my motivation is definitely there.

Where I have struggled is my diet. I am a plain eater, quite picky and I have always loved my carbs and cheese! Pizza, pasta, pizza, pasta! So now I’m trying hard to introduce more fruits and veggies.  The veggies are tricky, as I am not a big fan of them.  So now I feel like I’ve overindulged myself with fruits, and learned that I LOVE oranges!  I’ve tried to pick up on my protein, but meat is not something I have ever craved. But I’m working on it.

And I’ve gone from drinking 5+ Diet Pepsi cans of pop a day to at most two.  Sometimes I end up throwing some of it out, as it just doesn’t taste as good as I had hoped!

I know I will have ups and downs, I just hope there are more ups.  When I struggle, I must remember that this is for a better me and a longer life, surrounded by those I love!
