LiveFit Challenge Week 2: Leslie’s Update

Six Aurora BayCare Medical Center have embarked on a wellness challenge that will change their lives forever! Over the next six months, these people will be coached, trained and transformed into triathlon-level athletes through the Aurora BayCare Sports Medicine Live Fit program.  Follow their journey with weekly updates!

We’re catching up with our triathletes as they conclude their first month’s training.  Here’s an update from Leslie Iles:

“Three weeks of training have gone by and I finally have a routine down. More intense training starts in March and I’ll be ready for the challenge.

So I’m not a huge runner, never have been.  I think I was blessed with bad knees, they snap, crackle and pop.  I have tried running on a normal treadmill and my knees start to hurt, so I stop and walk.

I can do interval running but not long spurts until I found a new treadmill:  the Alter G Anti-Gravity Treadmill.  My trainer put me on it at my last training session.  I put on neoprene shorts and got zipped into a bubble which fills with air.  You can adjust what percentage of body weight you are running with.

Before I knew it,  I was running on 70% of my body weight at 5.5 mph.  I ran for 10 minutes like that and then adjusted the incline to 5 and ran another 7 minutes.  I could have run longer but my session was almost over and I needed to get to my daughter’s school conference. On a side note, she is doing very well in school.  I RAN FOR 17 MINUTES AND MY KNEES DID NOT HURT! That was the most amazing feeling in the world. I found my new best friend. I can’t wait to run on the Alter G again.

Food the one evil that we all have. Mine is dessert, any kind. I am one of those people who would rather eat dessert before eating their meal. I must admit that has been my biggest weakness so far.  In order to not go on a binge dessert eating day, I allow myself one dessert a week.

When people see me eating dessert, I get told to stop, I don’t need it, you’ll have to exercise more, etc. I know over time I won’t crave those desserts but right now when you see me eating them don’t say anything just allow me to enjoy it. If I deprive myself of them you may see me sitting at a table with 10 desserts around me to be eaten.

This week I have not had a single dessert, I stop at the dessert table in the cafeteria, look at and walk away. Another accomplishment this week!!

Two accomplishments in one week, what will I be accomplishing next week, I guess you will have to wait and see.”
