Athletes: could yoga improve your game?

Green Bay Gamblers season has finally arrived!  The boys are back and ready to rumble.

It takes a lot of blood, sweat and tears to compete at the elite junior hockey level.  Preparation is the key to a successful season.  Did you know that Aurora BayCare Sports Medicine is the exclusive medical and performance training providers for the Green Bay Gamblers?

Along with strength training, on ice training and our patented hockey treadmill, the team practices yoga.  I am the yoga instructor for the Green Bay Gamblers.  Yoga is a very effective practice for any athlete, especially hockey players.  A complete yoga practice includes strength, flexibility and balance components.

Yoga can help with injury prevention, muscular endurance, posture, oxygen utilization and self-awareness.

A strong core is also very important.  Without a strong core an athletes overall strength and power is drastically reduced.  All of the bodies movements originate from the core.  The ability to generate improved muscular strength and power along with balance, coordination and stability greatly depends on the functioning of the muscles of the core.

Along with all of the physical benefits gained from yoga, there is a very important mind-body connection.

Mental strength is a vital element in building focus and concentration necessary for succeeding in any sport.  Proper breathing is one of the foundations of yoga. Athletes who learn to stay focused and centered through uncomfortable poses by concentrating on deep inhales and full exhales, can utilize yogic breathing techniques to achieve peak stamina and endurance during a game or challenging workout.

On Thursday, October 6, the team took to their yoga mats for the first time this season.  Check out our first class in this YouTube video segment!
